Food Garland
While you are decorating your home for the holidays, don't forget about decorating the outdoors for your wildlife friends.
Years ago people decorated their Christmas tree with popcorn that they strung. We don't do that today, but why not string some popcorn and fruits for the birds and other animals.

Monitoring the Panther
Although he's not a criminal, scientists have been following the trail of a three-year-old panther in Florida. Since he is wearing a radio-collar, they have been able to pick up his movement through the transmissions.
In the west, cats travel hundreds of miles, but in highly developed areas there is less available space for roaming. This panther is proving that animals will search out better locations when ever possible. Some biologists believe that many of the young male panthers are killed over territory disputes.
If this is the case, then, this cat knows it's sometimes better to run away from a fight.

The Brown Creeper
You might have brown creepers in your yard and never really see them.
These tiny birds measure 5 inches from beak to tail and have speckled brown feathers that blend right into the trees that they are feeding on.
The brown creeper climbs up the bark of a tree just like a woodpecker. Like other winter birds, insects make up much of its diet. They feed on larvae, beetles, weevils, aphids, and other bugs.
Maybe secluded would be a better way to describe these birds. They build their nest behind a loose section of bark to keep it well hidden. The female will lay five or six eggs that hatch in about two weeks. Two weeks later the young leave the nest.
If you want to try to attract these birds to your feeder, put out chopped nuts. Since they rarely visit a feeder if other birds are around you may want to rub suet into the bark of a tree. Either way, these birds will enjoy the treat.

Q. Where do the fish go when the water freezes?
A. Depending of the species of the fish, several things may happen.
First, although the ice on the water may be thick enough to walk on, there is usually unfrozen water under the ice. The fish in larger lakes will go toward the deepest part of the lake.
Second, some fish slow their metabolism down. This is not the same as hibernation, but they move very slow and eat very little. This preserves energy. As the water heats up in the spring, they will return to normal.
Third, some fish move from the cooler, shallow water to a larger one where they will find more suitable conditions.
